Aristotle on law and virtue

Since happiness is rational activity expressing virtue, the laws of the ideal constitution must be designed to inculcate the virtues. Indeed, Aristotle argues that if the legislation in a community is not designed to foster virtue, the community isn’t really a city-state at all. The statesman’s knowledge of the virtues and his possession of them will obviously help him with this task.
